I Promise | A Sure Bet

Remember when your Dad or Mom would promise that on Saturday, the whole family would go out and get ice cream together? Or maybe go to the movies? Do you remember how excited you would get in anticipation of spending time with them? And do you remember how horrible it felt when they let you down?

More often than not, we get our hopes up only to be dashed by uncontrollable circumstances. This world is full of disappointments. But our Good Father in Heaven knows that we are vulnerable to let downs, so instead of making us a promise, He called it a Covenant.

cov·e·nant /ˈkəvənən noun : covenant; plural noun: covenants

an agreement.

Synonyms: contract, compact, treaty, pact, pledge, promise, bond

Gods promise to us is simple… a Rebirthing by the Holy Spirit that allows us to accept the Grace He offered freely that will cleanse us white as snow so as to be brought into the Holiest of Holies and live there forever in complete and utter Peace with Him.

The only thing we must do to recieve it, is Believe in it. We must BELIEVE that God will do as He said He will do. Seems easy doesn’t it? Unfortunately, easier said than done.

As children, the younger we are, the more gullible we are to Believing in something we can’t see. For instance, Magic. As kids, we see magic everywhere! In our imagination as we run around the woods, in starlight, in dark places, and even in others. As children we see the world as a magical place where dreams come true and Hope is the one thing that drives us to try harder, learn more and explore. The problem is, we grow up.

As we grow, let downs and broken promises become harder and harder to forgive. The world becomes a place of let downs and hurtful ways. We become callus to believing in magic and start believing in the uncertainty of this world. It is that spark of uncertainty that grows into the very foundation of adulthood. The ever evasive, Unbelief.

TOKOGAE also plays a super factor in our innate inability to BELIEVE in a promise. By natural defenses of the knowledge of Good and Evil we are hosted with a parasitic core of belief in ourselves instead of our creator. We grow our uncertainty of the world into belief in ourselves, because it’s us against the world, right? No one can save you but you. The only person you can trust in is yourself. How many times have we heard this self reliance and self confident rhetoric?

A quote by Michael Bassey Johnson, writer of a book called, “The Infinity Sign” is, “If you truly want to be respected by people you love, you must prove to them that you can survive without them.”

This is a classic “self-reliance” cliche. By which it puts a human in a mindset that they must learn to survive, number one. And then that they must do it alone. God never created us to walk alone on this Earth. The true definition of the term self-reliance is reliance on one’s own efforts and abilities. But we see over and over in the scripture that God knows we need support, that we cannot do it alone and that God is here to help us with everything!

Genesis 2:18
Then the LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.”

God had seen that loneliness is not good for us! He wants us to commune with others, to help one another out. To be self sufficient is completely against the original thought of Man’s existence. Unfortunately, all the loss of dependency we create in this life, due to TOKOGAE, causes us to perpetuate our Unbelief in others.

We, as a society, actually base our entire world on this one tiny seemingly insignificant behavior. But it brings radical changes to the perceived knowledge we boast in, therefore causes us to stumble when we decide to follow along with something as innocent as believing in a promise.

How many of us have insurance? We insure our automobiles, our homes, our belongings and even, our Lives! We are in a constant state of believing that we may lose. We may lose a job, our vehicle, our home and even, tragically, our lives! So, if we spend all this time believing in loss, what Hope do we have to sustain us?

The scripture consistently tells us to Let Go and Let God. Christ talks about us seeking the Kingdom and all other things will be added unto us. We hear that God loves the birds of the fields, but loves us so much more that why wouldn’t He provide for us? But alas, in our stupor, we fail to see the Truth of the Covenant and continue to walk blindly in our religions. People say living this life is not for the weak-hearted and I would have to agree with them. This life is wrought with sadness and loss, hatred and mourning, ghastly surprises and horrible events. But, when we look at living with God, it is full of provision and love, freedom and hope, laughter and jubilee! The idea of walking with God for eternity is a wonderful and magical idea! But somehow, we always turn it back into strife and tribulation.

As Believers, we must understand that to enter the kingdom of Heaven, we must become like Children. Christ says in Matthew 18:3, “Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.” What does that mean to jaded adults who have already lost their ability to Believe in something greater than themselves? It means, we must learn how to play again.

In order to Believe, we must put aside our different feelings for one another and simply relax knowing that we have a Poppa God handling all the hard stuff for us. We must continue to nurture one another in our dependency on God instead of ourselves. We have got to find a way to Believe, otherwise, we will live in a viscous cycle of shame for the rest of our lives.

Self Love Techniques and Remedies are not the answer folks. I am sorry to say, but you cannot and will never be able to fix you. Only God can change us. We have got to come to the bottom of ourselves knowing that our Creator is the only one who can truly change who we are, remove our hurt and make us innocent again.

The beautiful Covenant God gave us is for the weak-hearted, the lost, the old, the smothered and the grown-ups who think that the entire world rests on their shoulders alone. Our Father gave us this Covenant to hold onto as Hope! Not as a something to live up to. But in order for us to recieve it, we must forget everything TOKOGAE has taught us about Life. And remember that it truly can all come up roses.

Titus 3:4-7

But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, 5. He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, 6. whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7. so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Today, play. Seek the Kingdom, it’s a magical place with treasures untold just waiting for us to enter. We can visit that place within our minds right now! All we have to do is Believe in that place instead of “adulting”. I’m not saying forsake your responsibilities, but we must as the church remind ourselves how important it is to strengthen our Belief muscles, otherwise, the nothingness of unbelief may take over our minds and shut out all God’s Glory He has to offer.

It’s time to Believe in magic again.
