Fighting Cancer | A Prayer Raising Event

As Believers, we see numerous verses in the Bible that encourage us to pray and seek the Lord in our times of need and God promises to answer us. But when do we seek Him? At our last hour of need, or do we stay in constant communication with Him? Let us discuss our prayer intents a bit further and how staying in communication with God is the answer to our prayers.

When we seek God first for answers to our quandaries, we are inviting the Lord to take control of our situation. We are openly admitting our need for His guidance, mercy and help. This dependency on God is what builds our Faith and understanding of the way He wants to work in our lives and what His will is for us. So, why isn’t it something we do every single day?

In Thessalonians, Chapter 5 we see a glimpse of how we should live because we are Grateful for the Lord’s gift of Grace. In the seventeenth verse, Paul gives included instructions to pray, without ceasing with a Grateful Heart!

1 Thessalonians 5: 17-18

pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

The purpose in this is to build that relationship with our Father before we reach the last hour of need. So that we can be rooted in Him and not be afraid when trouble comes our way. Because, let’s face it folks, bad things happen here on earth… but it doesn’t mean that we as Believers can’t face those issues confidently knowing that God will protect us and that no matter what happens, we will conquer and overcome. Many times, we are compared to Trees in the Bible. The meaning of this is that our Spirit is “rooted” in God instead of this world so that we can stand strong in moments of weakness.

Colossians 2: 6-8

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.

Recently, my Father, Steven Scheffler, was diagnosed with Cancer. The day my mom called me was a frightful one, filled with anxiety and questions. We were told it was one of the worst types of cancer’s and that it was the hardest one to fight. Melanoma, not for the weak-hearted.

So, my family and I continued to pray. We sought the Lord for Hope, Peace without Understanding and for Joy. We decided the best way to fight this was to affirm our Beliefs and stand on the foundation of the knowledge we had about our Heavenly Father. We know without a shadow of a doubt that He is never against us, that He will never forsake us and that Jesus Heals!

The Gospel also teaches us to pray with a Grateful Heart. Why do you think that is? Because we are to be Grateful knowing God has already answered us and we can Rejoice knowing we have already overcome the situation we are praying about! Wow! So, in the end, there is no time for worry when our immediate reaction to Prayer is Praise and Thanksgiving; is there?

Mark 11:24 24 “Therefore, I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted you. – NAS Version

So, we started rejoicing as a family! Talking about how funny it would be if my dad lived another 50 years! Or how awesome it would be if He went home to see Jesus! The situation went from a dreary mourning to a confident and joyful one. We were walking with the Lord through a fire but we knew we would come out of all of this just fine no matter what the results were.

For the past several months, the Scheffler Family has been praying and rejoicing. God has given us Hope and Laughter, Faith and Strength and even though my dad has had several strokes and is still fighting cancer, we remain in Love with God, putting all things aside to worship Him.

“I am grateful for what I have learned through this journey. It has taught me so much about daily living and how to appreciate every single moment of every day. It has also taught me what powerful prayer really is. What prayer is designed to do for our souls. It is not to be compared to the quick act of shaking that eight ball toy for a desired answer… It is a miraculous life-long healing process where we learn to hold onto Jesus. It teaches us that no matter what we are going through, everything will always be okay.” – Corrie Vallance
